The Global Crop Diversity Trust has launched a major effort on the collection, conservation and use of crop wild relatives of 26 focal crops. The project is being implemented over a ten year period and has started off with determining gaps in current ex situ collections, followed by a collecting effort with the aim of filling some of those gaps. Some pre-breeding efforts using CWRs will also be supported during the later part of the project. The Trust has been convening consultation meetings with crop experts aimed at exploring and discussing strategies for pre-breeding using crop wild relatives of several of the focal crops of the project - including carrot.
The discussions will be centered around the potential of exploiting crop wild relatives for carrot breeding in view of global climate change and will address issues, such as:
