Program On August 24 and 25, 1998, the 27th International Carrot Conference will be held at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin. We now have details about the Conference and we look forward to hearing from you.

The purpose of the Conference, sometimes aptly called a workshop, is to bring together everyone and anyone interested in carrots: growers, packers, shippers, seed producers, breeders, pathologists, sellers, marketers, University and USDA researchers, extension specialists, students, and anyone else interested in the carrot industry.

We expect to hear oral presentations and see posters on all aspects of carrots, with time for discussion, on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday morning, August 25. To maximize opportunities for discussion, lunch on Monday will be included as part of the program and served at the Monona Terrace. After a late afternoon break, Monday’s program will reconvene with a social hour and banquet.

After a full morning and afternoon of carrots, we will provide yet another opportunity to discuss carrots on Monday evening. We will have two informal discussion sessions, on carrot production and carrot breeding, after Monday’s banquet in the Monona Terrace, with a moderator to keep the discussion moving in each group. For those of you who have not been to recent carrot conferences, you may be surprised that anyone would have more to say about carrots, but these have been well received by those looking for a chance to talk or to just listen.

Presentations will continue through Tuesday morning. After lunch at the Monona Terrace, we will have buses available to go to a nearby production farm to observe a wide range of carrot cultivars submitted by seed companies from around the world. A tour of packing facilities is also being planned.

As in previous carrot conferences, you are welcome to bring literature to distribute. We will not publish written proceedings of the meeting.

Post Conference Several opportunities are available to take in more aspects of carrot research and breeding after the formal program. One unique option is to take 1½ days (all day Wednesday, August 26, returning to Madison on August 27) to travel by bus to Ames, Iowa, where the USDA carrot germplasm collection is held. This is the 50th anniversary year of this USDA germplasm station so a wide variety of crop displays will be prepared. Carrots, of course, will be well represented. This trip will involve an additional cost of $110.

Some other opportunities to see more carrots after our formal meeting include two tours in the Madison area. Asgrow-Seminis Seed Company’s carrot breeding station in DeForest, Wisconsin is an important component in the development of new Asgrow carrot varieties. The Department of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin houses both the University of Wisconsin carrot breeding program and the USDA program. Examples of pigment analysis, molecular markers, tissue culture, transformation, and nematode resistance selection will be displayed. Tours of both these operations will be available on Wednesday.

Location and Accomodations The setting of the 27th Carrot Conference is the recently constructed Monona Terrace Convention Center in downtown Madison (events). This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure on Lake Monona is a short walk from the Capitol building (photo) of the State of Wisconsin.

The University of Wisconsin campus is less than a mile away. Other attractions in Southern Wisconsin include the House on the Rock, Taliesin, Cave of the Mounds, and Old World Wisconsin. The ‘Central Sands’ region of Wisconsin, about 2 hours north of Madison, accommodates a very large production of snap beans, peas, and sweet corn for processing in addition to carrots. Brewery tours in Madison or Milwaukee as well as numerous cheese factories in the area provide opportunities to sample other dietary essentials derived from Wisconsin agriculture. Milwaukee is about 1½ hours away, while a drive to Chicago takes 2½ hours.
